Modelling with sheets - introducing computational thinking across the curriculum

Computational thinking is an important set of tools to help students develop higher-order thinking and problem-solving skills. It isn't just learning to code and it isn't confined to just computer science classes. In this presentation David Hellam shows through a series of practical examples how Google Sheets can be used as a stepping stone to develop computational thinking skills in any classroom.

David Hellam is a Google for Education Certified Innovator who teaches computer science at Riverside School, Prague, Czech Republic.

This presentation will cover the following topics

Modelling with sheets

  • What is a model?
  • Why does modelling matter?
  • Patterns all around us
  • Visualisation - using models and charting tools to solve problems
  • Coding challenges - when a spreadsheet isn't enough
